worth $3.7 billion and growing; abuses, bribes
and hidden fees common

by Michelle Konieczny

According to a business analysis released by Marketdata Enterprises, the Adoption Services and
Fertility Clinic Industry is currently worth an estimated $3.7 billion dollars and is expected to grow by
11.5% annually till the year 2004. The report, released on October, 16, 2000, is the first such analysis
performed of this service industry, and numbers some 147 pages.

Marketdata Research Director, John LaRosa stated: "There were 138,000 adoptions in 1999.
A typical adoption costs $15-30,000 dollars, is complex, emotional, and the field is loosely regulated,
making abuses, bribes, and hidden fees common, especially when adoption foreign children. Less
restrictions in Russia and China are fueling demand by US couples for Caucasian infants, which are
in short supply in America. In addition, rising infertility rates and delayed childbearing, combined with
new technologies, add up to strong demand for the nation's 400 fertility clinics and 1,500 OB/GYN
specialists. There were only 187 clinics operating in 1990."

Other major findings of the report related specifically to the Adoption Services include a finding that it
is a $1.4 billion/year business alone. The report found that onthe average a small adoption agency
typically grosses $400,000/year, and large agencies $10+ million. It also stated that the fees charged
to adopt average from $13,000 - $20,000 and have remained stable for years.

It stated and estimated 4,500 adoption "providers" in the US (2,000 private agencies, 500 adoption
attorneys, 2,000 public agencies). The number of private agencies have rapidly increased with the
increase in international adoptions. The number of attorneys involved in adoption has doubled in the
last 10 years.
