Several hundred thousand families joined Pope John Paul II in Vatican city in October to celebrate the Jubilee of Families. The gathering included families from many different countries. During the night, the Pope gave a talk in which he spoke of the Rights of Children and the belief in the "right to a child".
Quoting a press release sent out by the Vatican Informaiton Service, Pope John Paul II said, "unfortunately as we well know, the situation of children in the world is not always what it should be," especially "in rich countries where bringing a child into the world... (is often seen) more as a threat than as a gift."
When addressing the "tendency to use morally unacceptable practices in generating (children)," he said: "How different and worthy of encouragement is, instead the practice of adoption!" The Pope further stated, "'The tendency to take recourse to morally unacceptable practices reveals the absurdity of the 'right to have a child' mentality, which has substituted the just recognition of the 'right of the child' to be born and grow in a fully human way." The Pope further promoted adoption by saying it was "a real exercise of charity that places the good of children before the parents' needs."
During his speech the Pope also stated that "In our time, the recognition of a child's rights has seen progress, but suffering remains because of the denial of these rights in practice, manifested in numerous attempts against his dignity."
(Editor's Note: We
are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a response to an inquiry that
has been sent to Pope John Paul II regarding his position on open
records.)
